Yesterday , I attended a Ban Shark Fins protest in little Chinatown.  I was part of the group Fin Free Melbourne which have protested against the barbaric act of shark finning.

Despite this being help in Chinatown on New Years for them, we did not have one single individual of Asian descent disagree with our point of view or tell us what was happening was inappropriate. This protest consisted of about 30 people who held up signs, gave our leaflets and held up a banner whilst moving around to Chinatown to various establishment's that sold this vile product and protested against them. The finale consisted of the poster bearers on the second floor holding up signs and on the third floor a group went to the balcony to hold up the banner. A lot of the general public seem very interested in what we were about and asked plenty of questions.

What Is Shark Finning?
Fisherman hunt down sharks, regardless of any species, catch them, cut off their fins and throw them back into the water. These sharks, majority of the time are still alive & are then unable to swim to get away from other predators and they slowly die most commonly from suffocation. Sharks are not some fearsome monster we see on Jaws and only 3 deaths a year happen because of Sharks. You are more likely to die by a coconut!



The Shark population has dwindled down by 90% and they are an essential part of the ocean's ecosystem. These fisherman are not only doing unspeakable torture to these animals but fishing them out of the sea and out of this world. Before we tell off the Japanese for their unspeakable slaughter of Dolphins & Whales for "research" we should also  fix the problems on our own shores.
